That depends on your goals. If you want to be competitive to win state, year-round practices are best. We do not encourage specialization in one sport either so this means most of our kids will be doing two practices a day. Practice attendance varies based on kids being in other sports. High school state is very competitive so we do offer extra practices that can be attended during the week to help you improve faster. Most high-level athletes in high school are putting in 16 to 18 hours a week into practice, strength training, and private training in season.
A ringer is actually a word for a wrestler in German. A Ringer is also an expert at something as known in the English language. They sent a Ringer. Meaning they sent an expert to win in place of a novice This play on words is a clever way of saying we are wrestling experts. Ringers wrestling is a battle-proven way to perform better.
A month is a great way to get started our rooms fill up typically right before key competition times. A one-month membership will get you into shape, and give you whatever we are training during that period. Training content is covered in rolling cycles. During key competition periods, we do shift content to cover things our full-time members need help on. The fastest we have ever seen anyone learn our core curriculum is in 3-year. Remember that knowing moves does not mean mastery. Each time strength or growth occurs, you need to reteach your body the movements. In order to master our process, you must drill year-round, with supervision from trained coaches to ensure good habit formation unless you're a world champion of course.
Kids should start wrestling when they can pay attention and follow regular cadence and instruction like in school. We suggest as young as four; however, our four to Six -year-old class does not just focus on wrestling. For younger kids, overall movement skills and having fun are more important than learning to be an Olympic champion. Not all wrestling schools or clubs have the same class structure, so it is best to go and watch a class to see how the instructor interacts with the children and then determine what is suitable for your child. Many of our local clubs are great ways to get introduced to wrestling
Wrestling is generally, agreed upon by experts as a great sport for kids. It i suggested that kids start wrestling at around four or five. It is the perfect age to start in a youth wrestling program near you. With youth wrestling programs near me all over, selecting the right program makes a huge difference Kids's wrestling should be supervised by a skilled coach.
Why Starting Early is important?
Emersing a child into youth wrestlling early on gets them used to it. They absorb advanced techniques and it gets deeply engrained, which isn't always clearly displayed but when things click kids who have wrestled and competed a long time do have an advantage. This includes learning to respect your opponent and ensuring that they don’t take any action that could physically hurt them. Remember, wrestling isn’t about pain or brute strength, particularly at a young age. It’s about tactical maneuvers to get your opponent on the ground as quickly as possible. By learning the basics early, kids can quickly develop their skills in wrestling and it will be far more enjoyable.
Teaching young wrestlers About Fitness
It’s essential to keep kids fit from an early age through any sports activity, but wrestling is a fantastic option. With wrestling, it’s possible for kids to not only enjoy physical activity but develop through it and learn emotional maturity. Wrestling is a highly-respected sport and to succeed it is essential to follow the rules. By learning early, kids will understand the importance of these rules and ensure that they are aware of their place in the ring. In addition, it can boost the development of hand-eye coordination and improve muscle strength.
What About Middle School wrestling is that too late?
Some kids will start wrestling in middle school and join a youth wrestling program, but this can be tough. Since several kids begin wrestling and learning the moves at a much earlier age, they will already be at a disadvantage. The benefit is that young middle school students already have the emotional maturity needed to succeed in wrestling; they won’t need to learn. But at the same time, while other kids are trying complex moves and taking more formidable opponents, they will first need to learn the basics others mastered through youth wrestling at 4 or 5.
Health Benefits
It was once believed that sports such as wrestling were dangerous for children and could damage their growth potential. We now know that’s not true, and actually, it’s the opposite. By engaging in sports like youth wrestling and joining programs, kids can improve their strength and flexibility. There are no dangers to their health as long as they are properly supervised. This is why it’s a wise decision to enroll them in a youth wrestling program so they can train under the guidance of an expert.
We hope you find this advice helpful when choosing when to enroll your child in a youth wrestling program. An earlier start could provide them with a significant advantage later on.
Many youth wrestling parents love to get involved, which is excellent! However, we heavily discourage parents from stepping in during practice. Remember, these are kids! Everyone wants their child to be a national wrestling champion; all kids learn at different rates. As long as your child is respectful and responsible, Ringers has a way of slowly getting kids to take ownership on their own. The mental aspect of developing a wrestler is of our process; hang in there. It will all come together in high school!
Ringers' aim is to develop Olympians and collegiate-level athletes when kids leave our program. The aim at the local level is typical to win the state title. With more aggressive goals, it requires more work to stay ahead of a high-level nationwide competition.
This question is a loaded question for us. Purely performance speaking, only wrestling at Ringers will provide better results on average. However, getting as much mat time as long as it is structured, with proper coaching, with the appropriate number of coaches to children for accountability, will always add some value. Our youth team averages 12 to 20 state champions a year. We typically have 6 to 10 kids that are top 10 in the country all in the same room any night. We get those results because of our processes and process controls. We have coaches that offer national and international travel coaching on staff. Our process knowledge runs deep across all age and developmental levels. We know process control in practice is a significant input to developing great technical habits. What it boils down to is what are your goals, and is their consistency in the accountability level during practice? Quality at the local club level is hard to measure, so it becomes the parent's chore to vet their local club. If you have concerns that your child isn't tracking and you're doing your local club, we suggest dropping back to only Ringers and making your Ringers coach aware of your concerns. If the glide path smooths out, then continue with Ringers only. If not, schedule a sit-down with the coach and the athlete to get to the bottom of the performance issues.
At Ringers, yes, and the reason why is because of the way the curriculum is structured. Many kids will join other martial arts at four years old and practice that discipline their entire life. Wrestling should be treated the same. Where parents go wrong is too much competition when the child is not ready for it. Competition adds undue pressure when the focus should be on learning, getting stronger, and developing. Wrestling should be fun; we keep our little guys and girls focused on learning gymnastics, tumbling, and overall athletic development through games and drills. Our expectations are that by age 8, they are competitive at a state qualifier type level if starting at 4. However, all kids have different glide paths. As kids grow there, bodies change, and proprioception can become challenged when growing quickly. Keeping it fun and keeping the kids coming to practice is our number 1 goal. You can't get better if you hate what your doing. Plus people like doing what they are good at! Starting young and developing a routine typically provides a great advantage in technical ability.
Most tournaments require a USA wrestling card. To compete at State and Nationally you need a card. Ringers is a USA wrestling-sanctioned club so kids are highly encouraged to get a card. All of our coaches are required to have cards. https://www.usawmembership.com/login
Proper practice should have a well-put-together plan. Every minute of practice deserves planning created by a high-level coach to use mat time fully. We don't believe unsupervised practices provide value. Unless you are very disciplined and understand how to drill at a collegiate level, that is the exception. Typically only top high school athletes are at this level. Unsupervised practice or practice led by other kids can be a fast path to bad habits. We default to suggesting professionally guided coaching to make the most of your time, which is what it boils down to. These rules apply to almost all training for any sport with very few exceptions.
